Tools
What is an A Record?
A-Records are the basis of the DNS system. These allow you to point a
domain name to an IP address.
e.g. subtledomains.com -- 64.125.33.369
This association is the heart of the domain name system across the web.
Each association is a unique record in the DNS registry.
What is an MX Record?
An MX or a Mail Exchanger record controls the mail system for your
domain name. This record is setup to accept mail for your domain name.
Generally, this mail record represents a mail server (SMTP) running on port
25. An MX record points other mail servers to the correct mail server for
your domain name.
Mail Exchanger records can handle multiple name servers, set according to
priority.
e.g. dartle.com MX
50 mail.dartle.com
What is a CNAME Record?
A CNAME record or a Canonical Name record represents a domain name
alias. It points a domain name to another domain name. The target domain
name is generally an A record.
e.g. www.subtledomains.com -- subtledomains.com
What is URL forwarding?
URL forwarding is a temporary tool where you can forward an http request
for your domain name to another URL.
e.g. dartle.com -- www.allanswers.org/help/
What is cloaked URL forwarding?
Cloaked or Masked URL forwarding forwards a request for a domain name to
another URL, however, the domain name displayed in the address bar of a
browser is the original domain name and not the target URL.
The target URL is hidden. This is generally termed as frame forwarding.
What is a Name Server Record (NS Record)?
Nameserver records allow you to designate nameservers for your domain
name.
e.g. dartle.com -- ns1.dartle.com ns2.dartle.com
How can I register my nameserver?
To register a nameserver you should contact support. At this time, you
cannot register a nameserver using the web control panel.
e.g. ns1.subtledomains.net -- 213.32.2.222
